Antique Victorian Nobility Gold Enamel Hidden Lover's Eye Mourning Brooch 1861. A rare and fabulous Victorian nobility 18K gold and blue enamel mourning brooch or locket with a hidden lover's eye and inscription inside, dating to 1861. This truly wonderful and rare all original and exquisitely made solid 18K yellow gold Victorian nobility lover's eye brooch. Would have been a very expensive item to have commissioned back in the mid 19th century. 1861 was an historic year on both sides of the Atlantic with the Civil War starting and the death of Queen Victoria's adored husband, Albert. The brooch has wonderfully elaborate blue enamel scrolling initials inlaid into the gold below a five pointed blue crown interspersed with four leaves which is the heraldic crown used by Earls in British nobility. When closed the hinge and thumbnail opening slot is hidden and when opened it reveals a. Very finely painted gentleman's light brown eye and part profile set at an angle and surrounded by misty light blue clouds. The painting is protected beneath its original hand blown glass cover.

The engraved inscription on the inside of the lid reads'Entered into rest Feb''ry 25. The brooch has no hallmarks and tests for 18K gold. A fabulous opportunity to own a beautiful and rare item!

Lover's eye miniatures originated in the late 1700's when George, Prince of Wales (later George IV) felt the need to send his lover, Maria Fitzherbert a token of his love. The relationship was frowned at by the court so he employed a miniaturist to paint only the eye and so the liaison was kept anonymous. In 1785 the couple were married, although this was invalid under the Royal Marriages Act as his father, George III, had not approved.

Maria's eye was worn by George IV hidden under his lapel. This started a fashion of miniature lover's eyes in the courts and affluent families of England, America, France and Russia, a fashion resurrected by Queen Victoria. The brooch measures approximately 1 inch across and weighs about 10.7 grams. The brooch is in very good condition with light general wear.

There is a little enamel loss to the inlaid initials, otherwise there are no issues. The painting is in excellent condition as is the glass.

Both hinges work perfectly and the lid closes very tightly. Thanks for looking and please take a look at my other items!
