This beautiful piece was made during a period called the Art Nouveau Era! This time was also called "La Belle Epoque" in French which translates to "A Beautiful Time". This was very true due to the gorgeous designs that came our of this period. The Art Nouveau period was famous for it's flowing organic designs, flowing ladies, flowing floral designs, regal designs. Rene Lalique is a name synonymous with the world of jewelry, consistently ranked as one of the most influential if not the most influential jewelry of the last couple hundred of years.
Lalique jewelry first started in the Art Nouveau Period and gained popularity during this Era. His use of Iridescent and Opalescent glass, much like Tiffany & Co combined with his organic and beautiful designs brought Lalique to be a house hold name throughout the world during this Era. Lavaliere's are necklaces that included a chain or small link necklace, fairly long, that terminates in a single large pendant or tassel, which in turn often has additional pendants or tassels dangling from it; though named for a mistress of Louis XIV, the style is usually associated with turn-of-the-20th century jewelry, and remained popular into the 1930s. The necklace is un-signed, however Rene Lalique held the patent for this form of glass when this necklace was made. To the style of Lalique jewelry and it wasn't uncommon to have unsigned custom made pieces from the company.The bottom glass has a couple very small chips near the edges, please use the zoom button. The necklace includes one of the most beautiful pieces of jewelry i have ever seen. At the bottom of the Lavaliere pendant is a piece of hand carved Lalique craftsman Opalescent Glass. The pictures don't do this pendant justive, the pendant has an array of Opalescent hues throughout the translucent yet.
Lalique was truly a genius and master with glass. The design itself is classic Arty Nouveau with a classic appearance of a lady with flowing hair to the sides. The necklace features beautiful handmade craftsmanship and Art Nouveau craftsmanship. The Copper mounting to the glass is very organic in handmade style as well featuring flowing patterns. We are not sure if the chain is original or not to the necklace, it is of the period though.
The necklace chain measures 18 in length. The pendant itself measures 2 and 1/4" by 3/4". The necklace includes a secure spring clasp. Antique and Vintage jewelry is disappearing at alarming rates.
Unfortunately, most of the jewelry from this time period has been lost or melted down over the years, please don't miss your chance to own this special piece of history! The National Stamping Act was not enacted until 1906, before 1906 jewelry was not legally required to have a karat mark. This is one way to date items prior to the Art Nouveau time period.
