The glistening jelly-like panes have a magical glow framed in the gleaming gold plated silver. The brooch has a fan or shield-like shape with sensually curving lines within that convey depth and motion. It is centered with a bezel-set, high-domed oval chrysoprase cabochon stone, echoing the one dangling below and the six small round cabs that flank it, like the eyes of peacock feathers. It is signed on the back as shown in the penultimate photo, "Depose 900" along with their maker's mark that looks like conjoined letters in a swirl ("HL" or "PHL") for Heinrich Levinger of Pforzheim (or Levinger & Bissinger).
The firm was founded by Heinrich Levinger in the 1800s, became Levinger & Bissinger in 1903 and changed back to Heinrich Levinger in 1909. According to Ginger Moro in. Page 95, while their jewelry is less well known than that of Theodor Fahrner, it is equally desirable to collectors. It was known for its "stylized organic forms".
In silver and plique à jour enamel, some of which were by the celebrated Austrian architect and designer Otto Prutscher of Vienna. Slightly convex, it measures about 1-5/16" overall length by about the same width by about 5/16" deep. It has the old simple "c" clasp finding and extended pin stem. The brooch is in Very Good / Excellent vintage condition, especially considering its age (over a century) and material (the stained glass-like enamel). There are a couple small "dings" in the metal on the right edge and the next raised line over and a small surface flake in the adjacent enamel, an even more minuscule flake or two near the bottom, expected surface dirt, scratches and tarnish.
There is NO consequential damage (or any repair) to the breathtaking plique à jour enamel. There are absolutely no flaws of consequence and the brooch is an unqualified Knockout. This gorgeous museum-quality signed brooch by Heinrich Levinger belongs equally in collections of Art Nouveau, Jugenstil, Arts and Crafts, Enamel and Signed Jewelry. As Good as it Gets. The Best of the Best. What antique jewelry collecting is all about.
