The clasped hands fede ring enjoyed a revival in it's popularity during medieval times. The gimmel, or gimmal ring derives it's name from the Latin gemmellus, or twins and during medieval times comprised of two bands which interlocked and were often used as betrothal rings. It wasn't until around 1600 that the gimmel ring began to incorporate the symbols of the fede ring, the clasped hands, and they would sometimes interlock to cover a single or double heart symbol, held on a third band. This style was very popular during the 16th and 17th centuries. They were most often used as betrothal rings where the bride would wear one hand, the groom the other and the third ring holding the hearts would be worn by a witness. It was upon the joining in marriage of the bride and groom that the three rings would be similarly joined and would be worn be the bride. Symbol of good fortune to carry into their married life.
It is such a charming little thing, and the craftsmanship is astounding, to think that this was all hand crafted. N incredibly rare and adorable little symbol of love through the ages, and needs to be cherished once more. Unmarked as was common of the era but in my opinion test as 18ct gold. In very good antique condition, quite incredible for it's age.The three rings swivel smoothly and freely, the hinge being in very good shape, and come together in perfect alignment to push together smoothly and firmly, one hand slipping perfectly into the other. Round and strong and the engraving, for the large part, is still deep and fresh. Just wonderful, and a surprisingly neat, tidy and wearable ring. This will arrive in a ring box. I've actually added a little late Victorian ring box, shown in last picture. The hinge is a little slack but other than that it's in really good shape and the ring looks lovely in it. If, of course, you would prefer a modern one just let me know. A delightfully symbolic ring, steeped in over two centuries of history, ready to own, to wear and to cherish.
